Who doesn’t love Ikea? The world’s largest furniture retailer strikes that rare balance between form and function, selling homewares aren’t just cheap but thoughtfully designed and downright fun.

Ikea also makes really good meatballs, but that’s not why we’re here. No, it’s because the company just unveiled a new collection called Tesammans, and in it is a lampshade I think you should buy. Like, right now. In fact, buy several. Tell your friends. It’s awesome … and it will probably sell out.

Reimagining a 1980s Classic

While the limited-edition Tesammans lampshade is new to Ikea’s catalog, it channels an iconic design from 1983 that’s credited to Bent Gantzel-Boysen (who also designed high-end lamps for Louis Poulsen).

That lamp was called the Duett and it’s highly sought-after by vintage Ikea collectors — yes, they exist — retailing for hundreds on secondhand sites like eBay, Etsy and 1stDibs.

Both the Duett and Tesammans lampshades feature funnel-shaped shades and a clever use of colorplay. Duett was offered in green, orange, white and blue until Ikea retired the design in 1987.

Tesammans comes in two tonal colorways — a red-pink version that measures 11 inches; and an orange-green one that measures 13.75 inches. The latter comes with a small price bump from $18 to $25 due to the extended diameter.

Ikea hasn’t confirmed how long these lampshades will remain available. However, both colors are listed on the company’s website as limited-edition, so they likely won’t be around longer than a few months — assuming they even lasts that long.

Last year, Ikea released a $70 donut-shaped table lamp called the Varmblixt that went viral on social media, sold out and now retails for a 100-percent markup on secondary sites.

My advice: grab a few of these Tesammans lampshades while you can. Who knows? Maybe one day they’ll become collectibles in their own right.
