Did IKEA Just Quietly Modernize a Classic Chair Design?

The most interesting item in IKEA’s new BRÄNNBOLL gaming-centered furniture collection isn’t your standard accent chair.

IKEA, which has been on a new release tear lately, just announced its latest furniture collection dubbed BRÄNNBOLL. According to Google, Brannboll translates to “Rounders” in English. That name seems apt since, like the brand’s initial push into the space back in 2021, this collection is aimed squarely at gamers. That’s the video kind of gamer, not the “phay zat mian heez mahnee” degenerate gambling gangster-types.

Most of the items in the collection don’t appeal to my sensibilities. However, per typical IKEA, plenty of items feature clever features or details that harder-core gamers than I will undoubtedly appreciate.

But what did catch my eye was the chair above. IKEA has yet to share specific details about the individual items in the collection, so its official name is still a mystery. If I had to take a stab at it, I’d go with NOFINGKLUE.

Mysterious aside, the chair’s what looks to be a yellow metal frame and molded grey padded seat stood out first because of its apparent size. It seems relatively compact based on the scaling of the provided press images.

Apartment dwellers know that most accent chairs tend to be frustratingly big. And most of the trim options that do exist often look like a dining chair you decided to stick in a corner, because that’s what they typically are. So, even though this chair won’t blend with every interior aesthetic, having more viable trim options is always welcome, especially at IKEA’s prices and availability.

Upon further inspection, what stands out more now are the Bungie-like cords that attach the seat base to the chair frame, which, as the gif in The Verge’s story highlights, allow the chair base to rock with movement.

Presumably, the intention here was to allow gamers to translate the movement of particular energetic gaming sessions into their chair. Still, sitting in it should also feel relaxing for anyone who enjoys the swaying motion of a classic rocking chair, presuming you realize what you’re getting into the moment you sit down. It might also work as an option for a home nursery in a pinch for anyone soon expecting or currently dealing with a newborn needing soothing help from wherever they can get it.

And since the motion would come from the seat base and not the legs of the chair itself, it’s probably very quiet to sway in, no matter how fidgety you get.

IKEA says the new collection will officially launch this September, and we’ll be sure to pass along updates when we have them.
