A box — a four-sided container, sometimes with a lid — is a shockingly enduring concept that can be traced back to the origins of human ingenuity. Yet, even considering how ancient the concept is, it’s also still an everyday thing for most of us.

There’s also a ton of variation therein. Some boxes are flimsy, paper-based vessels meant for temporary use.

Others, like Best Made’s Powder Coated Steel Storage, are designed to stand the test of time, keeping everything inside safe and secure while enduring all the hardship you might throw at them.

Steel yourself

These aren’t the first solid steel containers Best Made has offered. However, they are the latest in the brand’s catalog, dating back to over a year ago, when the brand last selected between new material, color and finish swatches.

While they vary in size, shape and format, they’re all made the same. That is to say, they’re all remarkably tough and durable, while also looking spectacular.

All five options are built from spot-welded 22-gauge steel, which is exceptionally tough on its own. But they’re also powder-coated, giving them an additional boost to durability and corrosion resistance, which will allow them to last even longer than bare steel might, even without care.

The four lidded options also come with simple latch closures that are simple to operate but secure when closed (note: they don’t appear to offer locking compatibility).

These new boxes have also seen another change: the data plates are now recessed (instead of riveted), making them more stack-friendly.

Everything in its place

As mentioned, these storage solutions are available in five different sizes and formats. The smallest, the Type P, is a pencil box, whereas the Type 6 and Type 12 are more generalized desktop boxes.

The largest option is the classic Rolling Footlocker. As its name suggests, it sports a quartet of wheels on its base so you can scoot it around your home, workshop, office, garage or wherever. And yes, the wheels lock it in place when you need them to.

From an everyday carry standpoint, however, the black sheep of the family might be the most interesting: the Spare Parts Trays set. Made with the same powder-coated 22-gauge steel, these act like valet trays and make a great home for your EDC gear when it isn’t in your pockets.

Obviously, you can use any of these boxes however you see fit. There’s no rule saying you can’t keep vinyl records in the Rolling Footlocker and stick it in the corner of your music room or, more radically (kidding), use the spare parts trays to literally stash spare parts.

Along with latched boxes, there’s also a three-piece set of “Spare Parts Trays,” which can double as EDC valets.
