Field Company may be the new skillet on the block but early signs say the company has what it takes to reach the same level of pedigree as cast iron’s biggest names, such as Lodge or the newly acquired Finex.
Since its debut on Kickstarter in 2016, Field’s flagship skillet has garnered numerous accolades, including a permanent position on Just Get This, Gear Patrol’s definitive list of its most-recommended products. It’s light, smooth, sized well and arrives nicely seasoned, all of which make it ideal for everyday cooking right out of the box.
Field’s newest release, however, might be worth keeping in said box. The First Casting Field Skillet ($250) was made in 2016 as part of Field’s first production run. It shares the same specs as the company’s regularly available skillet but features a limited-edition stamp on the bottom that reads, “1st CASTING.”
First castings are significant in the world of cast-iron collecting, with those from established brands fetching high prices on secondary markets like eBay. Time will tell if early Field skillets will chart the same course but serious collectors should take heed.
Less than 200 First Casting Field Skillets are available to the public. And once they’re gone, it seems, they’re history.
