Philips Hue, like all the other smart lights on the market, has always leaned function over form. On the heels of making its bulbs more accessible than ever, the leader in smart lighting wants to make smart lights that look good, too. The Philips Hue 2019 range is adding three Edison-style lightbulbs, which combine 19th-century aesthetics with 21st-century innovation.
The Edison bulbs are part of the Hue Filament collection that replicates the original filament design: a clear bulb housing a wound glowing wire. Because the smart lights are recreating the style of old lightbulbs, the new collection will create a singular, warm color unlike other Hue lightbulbs, which boast enormous light color ranges (you can still adjust the brightness). The Filament lightbulbs can be used as a fully functioning light, but the idea is that when the light is off, the bulb serves a decorative purpose.
The Hue Filament collection will include an A19 bulb ($25), an ST19 tube shape ($28) and a G25 globe ($33). The full Hue 2019 range is to be released in October and includes a smart button, smart plug, smart spotlight and smart candle bulbs.
