At face value, there is nothing exceptional about Lancaster Cast Iron’s newly released skillets. They’re cast in a traditional shape, their teardrop handle is completely normal and they’ve got a pair of generous pour spouts. Sure, the cooking surface is machined-smooth, but so are those pans from Field Company, Finex, Smithey Ironware and Stargazer. The difference can only be felt. The Pennsylvannia company’s first skillet is significantly less heavy than competing pans in the craft cast iron market.
The aforementioned brands make 10-inch pans that hover between 5.5 and 6 pounds. Even Field’s pan, known for its light 4.5-pound build, is half-a-pound heavier. Lancaster’s No. 8, 10.5-inch skillet is just 3.9 pounds, making it the lightest skillet of its size … by a mile.
Launched on Kickstarter this week, the new company’s skillets are going for $99 and ship in November of this year.
