Used whiskey barrels are a hot commodity in the spirits market. Reposado and Anejo tequilas and many Scotches age their products in used whiskey barrels, which impart softer flavors and aromas than new casks. But even if you’re not buying barrels for a full-scale spirits operation, don’t let that stop you from procuring one for home use.
Each Templeton Rye barrel ($150) available for purchase is 53 gallons and made from white American oak that previously held rye whiskey for four to five years. That’s a great starting point, whether you’re aging homemade hooch, altering a white whiskey or simply using the barrel as a bedside table or barstool. Design wise, each barrel is stenciled with the Templeton logo and individually numbered. It’s like the discerning drinker’s neon sign.
