By the time Silo’s Kickstarter campaign concluded, the food-saving gadget had racked up nearly $1.5 million in funding. The basic idea is pretty simple — oxygen is the enemy of freshness, and vacuum-sealed containers are the best way for a regular person to remove oxygen from food-carrying vessels. By way of a small white base and a series of different-sized containers, Silo does this, but it also acts as a grocery organizer.
After sucking the air out of a container of avocados, Silo’s smartphone app prompts you to record what you’re putting in the fridge (or pantry) and other relevant information about the food item. Then, it begins tracking how much time the food has left until you should (probably) throw it out. Everything you store in your fridge in a Silo container is recorded this way, and you end up having a digital catalog of when you put what in the fridge, and how long it has left before turning. It’s also operable via voice control and all containers are dishwasher-safe.
