A dehumidifier is not an appliance that requires much thought. Typically, you stick one in your basement, plug it in, turn it on and only think about it when it’s time to empty its reservoir. But due to a widespread recall, you’re going to want to go and check your dehumidifier. Like, right now.

Why are dehumidifiers being recalled?

The recall comes from Chinese appliance maker Gree, which produces dehumidifiers and other appliances that are sold under more recognizable brand names like GE and Kenmore. According to Gree and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled dehumidifiers pose a fire risk and are responsible for at least 23 fires, 688 incidents of overheating and $168,000 in property damage.

Which dehumidifiers have been recalled?

The recall is quite wide-ranging, covering around 1.56 million dehumidifiers manufactured between January 2011 and February 2014. There are 42 models total included in the recall, spread across the brands GE, Kenmore, SoleusAir, Seabreeze and Norpole. You can find the full list of recalled dehumidifiers below.

What to do if your dehumidifier has been recalled

You should be able to find the model number of your unit on a sticker located on either the front, side or back of the machine, according to the CPSC. If it turns out you do own one of the recalled dehumidifiers, the first thing you need to do is unplug it immediately and stop using it. Then, head to Gree’s recall site and scroll to the very bottom. Click the link that says “US Consumer Information Collection” and enter your email to be put on the recall list. Gree will then contact you within 6 – 8 weeks to facilitate a refund. If after going through that process you’re unable to obtain a refund, you can file a recall complaint through the CPSC.
