The Best Beers for the Super Bowl, According to Craft Brewers

There’s a good chance you’ll drink a sickly amount of beer for the Super Bowl this weekend.

You may have stumbled upon a ridiculous stat that swirls around the internet this time every year; it claims that Americans drink roughly 326 million gallons of beer on Super Bowl Sunday. It’s not true, of course. It can’t be — unless we’re comfortable admitting that every man, woman and child in the U.S. will drink more than a gallon of beer. That said, it’s safe to assume that we’ll all drink a sickly amount of suds this weekend (after all, we average about 17 million gallons every day of the week). In that spirit, we asked five craft brewers to name the beers they’d recommend for the big game. If you can’t find them at your local grocer, you could always consult our guide to widely distributed IPAs.

Threes Brewing Kicking and Screaming & Victory Brewing Company Prima Pils

“When I think about football, I think about America. What’s more American than a crisp wood-aged pale lager? I’m reaching for Threes Brewing’s foudre-pils, Kicking and Screaming. If and when those are all gone, I guess I’d settle for Victory’s Prima Pils. — Jeff O’Neil, Industrial Arts Brewing Company

Lord Hobo Consolation Prize Imperial IPA

“All the dudes in New England are crushing on the quarterback guy all the time like ‘OMG, he’s so scrumptious.’ And if they can’t hang out with him, they can hang out with the next best thing: a good beer from New England, or wherever Lord Hobo is from.” — Jeremy Tofte, Melvin Brewing

Bunker Brewing Machine Czech-Style Pilz

“Spending the day watching the big game with friends relies on a well-crafted lager such as Machine from Bunker Brewing in Maine. The crisp German pilsner malt and Saaz hops lead to a perfectly balanced blend of smooth malt and herbaceous hops. Coming in at 5.2 ABV, it’s modest enough to satisfy and sustain.” — Brian Stillwater, Stillwater Artisanal

Trillium Congress Street IPA

“Not only is Trillium based in Boston, the style [here] is a New England style IPA. And it’s delicious!” — Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø, Evil Twin Brewing

Tired Hands Trendler Pilsner & Cambridge Brewing Co. Remain in Light Hoppy Pilsner

“Since it’s Philadelphia and New England, I’d recommend Tired Hands Trendler Pilsner and Cambridge Brewing Co. Remain in Light Hoppy Pilsner. Both are awesome beers, plus people can celebrate pale lagers that are American-made while all the Anheuser Busch ads are playing.” — Jeff Stuffings, Jester King Brewery
