Meet the First Tempur-Pedic Mattress That Isn’t for Boomers

The original mattress disruptor, Tempur-Pedic brought space-bound NASA tech into the bedrooms of millions. But can it make a mail-order mattress?

After decades spent selling foam-based mattresses out of showrooms, Tempur-Pedic has entered the mattress-in-a-box game. The new Tempur-Cloud mattress, made with their signature Tempur memory foam material, is meant to offer the same feel of the original traditional Tempur-Pedic mattress, but rolled up tight and shipped straight to you in a week or less (as opposed to two-plus weeks with white glove delivery on its standard offerings). We unrolled one and put it to the test.

What’s Good

My first impression was how lightweight the king-sized mattress was in the box. I was anticipating needing some help to get it into the bedroom, but I was able to muscle it in alone without much issue. The unpacking process is simple: open up the box or bag it came in, remove the cellophane wrap, unroll it and lay it down. The mattress “inflates” upon unwrapping, and is good to go in a few of minutes.

It’s made up of three layers; a foam base layer, the firmer foam support layer, and the top comfort layer that’s more plush and responsive to touch. The foam has a pleasant softness and give to it that you slowly sink into, but not so much that it feels like you’re carving yourself a permanent depression. I’m notorious for tossing and turning in my sleep, and I’m able to roll around just fine without sinking too deeply into the foam. It’s surprisingly supportive for a foam-centric mattress.

Other foam mattress-in-a-box options I’ve tried were either too stiff or lack support. Plus, because of foam’s motion transfer dampening, my rolling around isn’t keeping my wife awake. If my wife gets in and out of bed at any point I hardly notice, which has been great as she typically wakes up before me.

What’s Not as Good

As nice as the memory foam feels, this mattress tends to run a little warm. The stretch cover for the mattress is made with a moisture-wicking material that’s supposed to be better for breathability and air flow, but if you tend to run extra-hot while sleeping, you may want to consider a different material to sleep on.

Another factor to consider is that there’s not a whole lot of edge support on the outside of the mattress, so if you like sleeping on the very edge of your bed, it might feel at times like you’re falling off. I’ve always sat on the edge of my bed to put my shoes on, and I’ve had to opt for a chair instead because it feels like I’m slipping off.

Verdict

The Tempur-Cloud is the most comfortable mattress I’ve slept on. The brand’s foray into the world of mattresses-in-a-box proves it can do fast just as well as it’s done steady, if you’re willing to pay Tempur-Pedic prices and aren’t an exceptionally hot sleeper.
