Every year, since 1955, an international jury of experts and academics has come together in Essen, Germany, to vote on the best-designed products of the year. Their goal? To determine Red Dot winners — the design community’s version of the Oscars.
Submissions to the jury vary greatly, across 31 different categories, such as consumer electronics, watches and the outdoors. For 2016, companies from 57 countries submitted roughly 5,200 products. Earlier this week, 1,300 of them received a 2016 “Red Dot: Product Design” award, while just 79 were badged as their category’s “Best of the Best”, given only “to outstanding products in a category that win the jury members over with groundbreaking design.” They include things large as aircrafts and those as small as pocket knives. Below you’ll find a curated selection of GP’s favorite winners from a small category with a lot of love: “Tableware and Cooking Utensils.”
