You’re never too old to change, so the saying goes. But change is a bit easier when you are not that old to begin with.

So it should come as no surprise that Tecovas is trying something new. Because despite being inextricably linked with classically styled cowboy boots, the Austin-based brand is actually just nine years old.

What’s most noticeable, however, is the wedge heel, which instantly makes this boot look like the love child of an illicit Tecovas and Red Wing affair.

What’s new? A small but notable experiment called the Work Line, three boots purpose-built for real physical labor, highlighted by a fascinating hybrid called the LongHaul Waterproof Roper

What’s old is new

It’s rather ironic that we’re talking about a cowboy boot brand making news with work boots, when one could reasonably argue that cowboy boots are the original American work boots.

Like many early American things, their roots lie elsewhere, with the vaqueros of Spain and Mexico. Though the exact origin of the modern cowboy boot is unknown, it dates back to at least the 1850s and found plenty of work on western ranches, among other places.

These days, for many folks, cowboy boots are a style choice, which is why Tecovas can credibly launch a Work Line, and a rather interesting one to boot (pun intended).

On one end of the spectrum is the LongHaul Waterproof Square, which has the decorative stitching and heel of a classic cowboy boot. On the other is the LongHaul Waterproof Moc, which looks very much like a typical heritage boot.

Then, right smack in the middle, is the LongHaul Roper. It’s true to its name in that “roper” is a newer style of cowboy boot that is shorter, stopping below the calf, but it still has plenty of cowboy flair in the upper silhouette.

What’s most noticeable, however, is the wedge heel, which instantly makes this boot look like the love child of an illicit Tecovas and Red Wing affair. To be fair, it’s not the first Tecovas to feature a wedge; the brand’s popular Knox boot came long before.

That being said, it makes even more sense in a work context, because wedges are not only quite comfy but also grippy. The Roper features a dual-density cushioned outsole and a deep-lugged MuckOFF tread that sheds debris while being oil- and slip-resistant, delivering plenty of comfort and traction where it matters most.

The boot also features the brand’s energy-returning insoles, dubbed Total Energy Command (TEC), a breathable waterproof bootie, composite safety toe and Goodyear welt construction.

One final touch that just might make them superior to your average work boot? Four metal pull holes in each boot make them that much easier to pull on at the crack of dawn and pull off at quitting time.

Though we wouldn’t begrudge you at all if you left them on for happy hour. They’re still cowboy boots, after all.
