This Could Be New Balance’s Most Minimalist Sneaker Ever, and It Is Glorious

In a collaboration with Stone Island, the original Numeric skate shoe, the 272, gets a stripped-down reimagining.

Although they’re not as synonymous with the sport as, say, Vans, New Balance has dipped its toes into the world of skateboarding for decades. In fact, New Balance’s Numeric sub-brand has been dedicated to skating since its launch in 2013.

Now, the brand’s first official skate shoe is getting a minimalist redux in the Stone Island Marina x New Balance Numeric 272. And it might be one of New Balance’s best-looking shoes ever.

Do a kickflip!

This isn’t the first time Stone Island has collaborated with New Balance. Previously, the two brands have collided on versions of the 574, 991v2 and 998.

However, this is the first time they’ve collaborated on a skate shoe. Since this is New Balance Numeric’s first-ever official silhouette, this collaboration is a bit of a doozy.

The shoe is inspired by the spring-summer 2025 Stone Island Marina sub-collection. Details include a vulcanized rubber outsole, reflective detailing and a trio of colorways (white, yellow and blue) directly pulled from the greater collection.

Sole skater

It’s important to remember that this is a skate shoe and, therefore, is a pretty major departure from what New Balance typically releases.

This isn’t a dad shoe; this is an elevated version of the kind of sneaker you’d see down at Venice Beach below a pair of ripped-up Dickies and a vintage Alien Workshop tee.

The chunky vulcanized sole rises a little higher and is thicker than it would otherwise be to protect the upper from the wear and tear of dozens upon dozens of tre flip attempts. The silhouette harkens to some of the most classic skate shoes the world has ever seen, including the 272 itself.

Yet it still boasts upscale styling, like something Bucky Lasek might wear to accept a lifetime achievement award. It’s a shoe for skaters who never hopped off the board for good. And it is glorious.

This is your (admittedly blurry) reminder of what this shoe is ultimately for: shredding the gnar.

Coming soon

There’s one major catch to snagging a pair of Stone Island Marina x New Balance Numeric 272s for yourself: registering with Stone Island and signing up for the event before the launch.

Once you do, you’ll be added to the lottery. The good news is that only one purchase is allowed per user and only one pair per purchase. That said, they’re still limited, so it’s a crapshoot who will actually have the chance to buy these clean skate kicks.

Furthermore, pricing and availability are not yet available. Sign up on Stone Island Marina for more info.
