Since their release in the spring of 2021, Salomon’s X Ultra 4 boots have been among the most exceptional outdoor footwear. They were so good that they made the top pick (“Best Overall”) on our best hiking boots list.

However, they weren’t perfect — a fact the brand appears to be aware of. With its successor, the Salomon X Ultra 5, the brand has improved its best boot design in numerous crucial ways.

The boots’ new Kevlar-like Matryx weave gives the upper more durability where it’s needed most.

Upper crust

As mentioned, the Salomon X Ultra 4 — the predecessor to this new release — was an outstanding all-around hiking boot (and shoe). However, it had some problems. Namely, its toe cap and sidewalls were prone to blowouts — a big problem on an otherwise sturdy boot.

The 5 rectifies this with its new Matryx woven upper — a Kevlar-like material — and some strategically placed reinforcements.

The Matryx weave ensures a much greater degree of durability across the upper without hampering its flexibility or comfort. The reinforcement points add a little extra strength where the boot needs it most.

Pair that with the existing Gore-Tex waterproofing, and you’ve got boots ready for anything and everything. Plus, they’ll last a lot longer over extensive, regular hikes.

Ya big lug

The upper wasn’t the only part of Salomon’s premiere hiking boots that got some love and attention. The outsole and chassis system have also been improved.

The deep-treaded Contagrip outsole now features deeper, more severe lugs. Not only will this help them grip the terrain better, but it also serves to help the outsole last a lot longer. (It’s a common complaint that the X Ultra 4 lugs wore out too quickly.)

While the tried and trusted Salomon chassis system remains in the X Ultra 5, other changes to the boot design help improve its overall stability and support. This includes adjustments to the construction, namely in the sewing patterns and lace positioning.

Overall, Salomon’s dominance in the hiking footwear space seems sure to continue, especially for the more hardcore hiking crowd. But perhaps that’s to be expected when you consider that it’s a great brand that actually listens to customer feedback.
