In 2004, when Idiocracy was being made, the costume and prop team picked very specific shoes for every character in the flick to wear. The thought was twofold: they were inexpensive and ugly. The filmmakers even cited the fact that they thought they were too “horrible” ever to become popular.

Believe it or not, those shoes were Crocs. Since then, these foam clogs have exploded in popularity and have become staples of the fashion industry.

Now, they’tr turning the page with the Crocs Echo RO Clog. This innovation combines the classic mule-style foam clog with sneaker tech to make them way more outdoor-friendly. They might just be the perfect camp slides.

The rubber meets the (off)road

Typically, Crocs are made with a material the brand calls Croslite. While it’s technically proprietary, it’s a type of EVA foam — a common polymer employed frequently in contemporary footwear.

For the most part, the Echo RO Clogs are still made from this ultralight, cushy, soft material. They also retain a LiteRide cushioned footbed, ventilation holes and the signature back strap.

The rubberized outsole climbs up the heel and toe, ensuring you have full access to the extra grip throughout your step.

However, there’s one major change to these shoes: the outsole. Instead of being Croslite top-to-bottom, these ones have sneaker-like rubber on their underside.

While there are other Echo Clogs with a similar silhouette, the rubber on these ones offers a lot more grip than they’d otherwise have. That makes them a lot more ideal for uneven terrain, which brings me to my next point.

Along with the grippy rubber material, the rib-like shape of the outsole offers better all-terrain stability.

Campground clogs

Because of their unique form and materials, these might be the best Crocs to take with you on camping trips. But there are a couple of caveats.

You could probably get away with using the Echo RO Clogs as hiking shoes, but they’re not the most capable offering Crocs makes for that endeavor (see these ones from And Wander and End. for reference). However, they’re absolutely perfect for hanging out at the campground.

The uppers have ventilation holes for breathability and drainage (you know, if you camp near a lake or ocean).

Like other Crocs, they’re lightweight and super comfortable. They’re also waterproof and, because of their makeup, relatively quick-drying. And since they have a more secure, adjustable canvas heel strap, they easily convert to “sport mode” when you need it and stay on better than those with Croslite straps.

However, that rubberized grip also ensures more stability and traction control on uneven terrain, whether rocky, sandy, dirty, silty or whatever else. That way, you won’t slip and lose your hot dog or s’more before you can chow down.
