In the late 1960s, Lance Clark designed a shoe that would forever change the style world. Today, you can’t even talk about moccasins and moc boots without at least mentioning Clark’s Wallabees.

While this iconic British footwear has seen a lot of iterations over the years, the latest entry takes them in a new direction. Made in collaboration with Japanese outdoor apparel brand Daiwa Pier 39, the Clark’s x Daiwa Angler’s Walabee GTX SPs are more rugged than ever.

Thankfully, the Gore-Tex waterproofing is virtually invisible, allowing these Clark’s Wallabees to retain their iconic styling.

Weather bad weather better than ever

There are a couple of big changes with these Wallabees, but the biggest is probably the inclusion of a Gore-Tex membrane. This breathable layer ensures that the boots are completely waterproof, so you can wear them in even the worst downpours without worrying about your feet getting wet. As icing on the cake, the side zipper is also waterproof.

The brands have also swapped the boots’ soles to go with the ruggedized upper. While the signature platform remains, the outsole has been swapped for a more treaded Vibram one.

That’s not all. Daiwa Pier 39, a Japanese label founded by the former director at Beams Plus, draws inspiration from fishing gear, so those cues have also been incorporated into this release. Alongside the boots, the release includes a pair of angling-ready Gore-Tex gaiters. Attaching them to the boots extends the waterproofing up the wearer’s legs.

With the waterproofing and gaiters, you could genuinely wear these Wallabees the next time you go angling if you wanted to.

Classic cues (thankfully) remain

Admittedly, Daiwa’s take on the classic Wallabees seems like a lot of change for such an iconic piece of footwear. Thankfully, their overall styling remains largely unchanged, and that extends to the materials.

The upper, including the double-layered vamp, is crafted from 100 percent cowhide suede. While the classic eyelets have been swapped for outdoor-inspired buckles and hooks, their placement remains the same. The more ruggedized soles are still made of rubber.

Daiwa has done a masterful job of retaining the Wallabee’s soul while giving it a much more rugged, outdoorsy makeover.

Available now

Available through Haven right now, the Clark’s x Daiwa Angler’s Walabee GTX SPs aren’t exactly cheap. For a pair, you’ll have to pay $447.

Even then, sizes look limited, suggesting they will likely sell out sooner rather than later. If you wait, you’ll likely have to pay far more on the secondhand market to score a pair.
