In 2010, an entirely unknown e-commerce brand launched its first-ever product: a small, direct-to-consumer camp stove. Over the next decade (and then some), that same company would pioneer some of the most important technological advancements around fire pits and become the industry’s go-to brand.

Now, Solo Stove is returning to its roots, albeit in a very different, unexpected way that puts them in direct competition with another major player: Blackstone. It’s a tall hill to climb, but the Solo Stove Steelfire Griddle certainly looks up to the task.

I’m solo, I’m ridin’ solo

This isn’t the first time Solo Stove has dabbled in outdoor cooking. As mentioned, the brand was founded on a camp stove. However, it’s not the second, either. In 2022, the brand launched pizza ovens, which have since become a complete category in Solo Stove’s catalog.

That said, griddles are an entirely new category for the brand. Still, the company’s technological expertise pairs perfectly with this novel endeavor. From design to performance, this griddle is fully loaded.

The brand claims [the Steelfire is] the “first commercial-grade griddle built for the backyard chef.” That might be clever verbiage, but it speaks to the brand’s pride and confidence.

Smaller than many backyard griddles, the Steelfire can be purchased as a countertop device — ideal for those with existing backyard setups — or with a stand, turning into a standalone griddle. It is gorgeous, sleek and hides some serious tech under the hood.

More than that, the brand claims it’s the “first commercial-grade griddle built for the backyard chef.” That might be clever verbiage, but it speaks to the brand’s pride and confidence, which bears plenty of weight.

Harness the flame

The Steelfire hinges on a proprietary cooking surface and ultra-efficient, patent-pending dual Solo Racetrack Burners, which maximize the griddle’s cooking potential. This configuration also makes up for its relatively small overall surface area, as there are no hot spots to work around — every inch stays even.

It’s not just efficiency in the cooking area, either. The griddle can heat up in just seven minutes from cold, courtesy of its 3-ply clad stainless steel griddle surface. For reference, that’s up 35 percent faster than traditional cast iron. It’s also easier to care for and clean, as it’s resistant to corrosion, rust and so on.

The device itself is an impressive piece of backyard cooking tech, to be sure. But those who spring for the available stand will also enjoy the benefits of fold-down side shelves, integrated propane tank storage and a powder-coated steel construction.

Either way, this is a major new contender in the backyard cooking industry. Since it’s propane-powered (and relatively compact), it can travel, too, making it ideal for RVs, car campers, tailgaters and glampers alike.

Pricing and availability

The Solo Stove Steelfire Griddle is estimated to ship mid-july. That said, you can preorder it now for $900 for the tabletop version or $1,200 for the griddle and stand bundle.

That might seem like a high entry price, and it is, but if the tech is up to snuff, this thing will pay for itself in no time at all.
