Europe makes some seriously good gin, but with so many great gins produced stateside these days, why venture outside the cozy confines of America? Hailing from Lake Bluff, Illinois, North Shore Distillery makes a range of products, including a vodka and absinthe. But it’s the Distiller’s Gin No. 6 ($32) that’s really gotten our attention.
Distiller’s Gin No. 6 is made in a small, hand-hammered copper pot still, and is distilled with a blend of botanicals, including fresh lemon zest and lavender blossoms. It’s got some juniper kick, but is overall a floral, light-flavored gin, which may appeal to drinkers turned off by the big juniper wallop present in London Dry style gins.
On the nose there’s lots of citrus and lavender, followed by a bit of juniper and spice. Drink some down to taste flavors of ginger and clove mingling with the citrus and herbs. Cocktail wise, it works well in a martini, or simply pour a gin and tonic to quench the summer heat.
