Some products don’t need updates. You could argue the AeroPress is one them.

With its plastic body, the iconic coffee maker is small, lightweight, durable, unique and effective. Ounce for ounce, it may be the most powerful coffee maker ever designed. For camping and travel, I’m convinced it simply cannot be beaten.

But most days, I make coffee in my kitchen, not under trees, and the original AeroPress has always felt a bit, well, cheap compared to the museum-worthy Chemex and my stainless-steel Breville. (And, hey, it is.)

I also have questions about mixing plastic with hot water, even if the company has used BPA-free materials since 2009. (The current AeroPress is made with food-grade polypropylene.)

The company’s new coffee maker, the AeroPress Premium, addresses both of those concerns.

Premium materials for premium coffee

The AeroPress Premium swaps the plastic for a combination of materials worthy of the ultrasmooth, bitter-free coffee it can deliver.

Just like the Chemex, borosilicate glass makes up the brewing chamber. However, unlike that famous pour-over, it’s featured here in a double-wall construction that acts as a thermal insulator that also stays cool to touch.

The decision on AeroPress’s part to go with glass over something like ceramic also preserves one of the original’s best attributes: a see-through body for ease of brewing.

Meanwhile, anodized aluminum makes up the plunger and base of the chamber, keeping the weight down; the filter cap, crafted out of the stainless steel, is the heaviest individual component.

All in all, the entire package weighs around 787 grams (just shy of two pounds), according to my Acaia Pearl scale.

Price and availability

The AeroPress Premium is available now for $150. It comes with paper filters, as well as a scoop and stirrer, both upgraded to stainless steel.
