Coffee Instagram is a very strange, very deep rabbit hole. There are simple #CoffeePorn accounts whose influencer account owners blend half-nudity, a Chemex they’ve never used and clichéd captions (Rise and Grind) to find followers. These are not useful. Use this quick five-account sheet as your introduction to deep coffee weirdness.

James Hoffmann (with two Ns) is the first coffee person you should follow. A coffee book author and former World Barista Champion, Hoffmann’s Instagram (and slightly more in-depth Youtube channel) is fertile ground for learning about gear, brewing methods and coffee history.

If Hoffmann’s account is the first you follow, make Scott Rao’s the last. Rao’s semi-daily coffee tips and musings on the drink are read by coffee enthusiasts and professionals alike, and include everything from pour-over tips to graphs… lots of graphs.

Arkansas-based Onyx is one of few coffee roaster Instagram accounts that deviates from the standard drip of flashy café shots, photos of latte art and the occasional slow-mo espresso shot pull. Expect professional guides from the company’s absurdly talented roster of baristas, roasters and training team.
