Every holiday season, someone burns their house down while trying to fry a turkey inside. Why anyone decides to fry a turkey indoors is beyond our comprehension, but we’re willing to bet there won’t be any exceptions this year. For those so inclined, Masterbuilt teamed up with Butterball to create a safe, indoor, electric turkey fryer.

The words safe+indoor+turkey+fryer are words that we hesitate to use together. So, with a hefty dose of skepticism and apprehension, we signed up for this review after a quick check verification insurance policies and fire extinguishers.

Setting up the fryer is a simple, painless process, complete with easy to follow diagrams. The Masterbuilt Butterball Indoor Turkey Fryer offers a host of excellent features such as:

  • Accommodates turkeys up to 14 lbs
  • Digital timer with power/ready indicator lights
  • Adjustable up to 375 degrees
  • Fold-away lid with window and filter
  • Easy to lift basket design, with handy drain clip
  • Porcelain-coated inner pot for easy cleaning
  • Built-in drain valve
  • Takes 2 gallons of oil to fill, about 1/3 less than your regular fryer

The best feature, however, is the one they don’t list on the website: the power cord. The cord is similar to Apple’s Magsafe Power Adapter and features a magnetic connector that will disconnect if there’s any added tension on the line. An excellent safety feature, indeed.

Despite our inherent paranoia, no apartments were set ablaze whilst frying indoors. The skin on our test bird turned out crispy golden brown and the meat was succulent and savory, everything you’ve come to expect with a deep-fried bird. Even clean up is a breeze with the frying basket wiping clean with a minimal amount of effort.

Editor’s Tip: Make sure you fry in a well ventilated area or have a really good hood vent. As good as my bird tasted, having your entire apartment smell like a fryer is more than I bargained for.
