Hoka diehards endearingly refer to one specific model as the “GOAT.” But the nickname isn’t just a nod to its legacy as one of the best trail runners of all time.

The Hoka Speedgoat, now in its sixth generation, is fast and nimble, even on the gnarliest of trails — just like the mountain goats from which it derives its name.

And thanks to a new variant equipped with Gore-Tex, the Speedgoat 6 is now even more suitable to extreme conditions.

First released in 2015, the Speedgoat has always blazed its own trail from the rest of Hoka’s lineup. The shoes offers a neutral, responsive ride underfoot, with less cushioning than the brand’s big and bouncy road shoes.

But just because its minimal doesn’t mean it can’t take on technical terrain. Hoka actually modeled the most recent model’s outsole to resemble the split-toed hoof of a mountain goat, giving its 5mm lugs more aggressive grip and traction than your typical trail runner.

For trail junkies who plan to run no matter the conditions, Hoka just dropped a new variant of the Speedgoat 6 with a lightweight Gore-Tex membrane.

The addition should promise improved weather resistance on wet, muddy trails, with only a slight decrease in breathability and drying times when they do get wet. But since the shoe is designed for fall and winter, when the temperatures drop, it could be an easy tradeoff.

Pricing and availability

The Speedgoat 6 GTX is available now in two understated colorways — black and gray Stardust. Both come in sizes ranging from 7 to 15, but only the black is available in a wide width. A pair will run you back $170, a $15 premium over the standard Speedgoat 6 without Gore-Tex.
