Despite its reputation as a brand that prioritizes comfort over speed, Hoka set off on a blistering pace this year. It has yet to slow down.

Since the start of 2024, it introduced dozens of new models, ranging from the towering Skyward X to the super-fied Tecton X 3. Oh, and who could forget the Mafate Speed 4 Lite Stsfy, a versatile collaboration with haute running label Satisfy?

To close out the year, the brand is now revisiting the original Clifton from 2014 — a model that solidified Hoka as a true contender in the road-running wars and proved the company could make a maximalist shoe that didn’t wear like a brick.

A decade on, the Clifton, now in its ninth iteration, routinely tops best-of lists (including Gear Patrol‘s own), appealing to a broad range of runners and walkers for its lightweight design that still offers ample amounts of cushioning.

As a result, the Clifton isn’t just Hoka’s number-one model but one of the most popular shoes in the world — that is, from any brand, even the heavyweights like Asics, Adidas and others.

Up to speed

The new release, called the Clifton One9, is an homage to that very first Clifton, however, it also brings a decade of R&D to the table for a shoe that’s simultaneously retro and up to speed on the latest tech.

For starters, it comes in the original 2014 colorways, Habanero and Citrus. But Hoka didn’t just slap on a couple of vintage color schemes and call it a day.

It also gave the Clifton One9 a TPU film overlay on top of an open-hole mesh upper, akin to the original. The revised model also gets a streamlined, race-ready tongue as opposed to the padded one found on the latest Clifton 9.

What it does get from the newer model is Hoka’s most up-to-date foam, compression-molded EVA, and more of it. The shoe features a 32mm stack height — 3mm taller than its forerunner — for a smoother, softer ride, overall.

The Clifton One9 will be available from Friday, December 13, capping off what can only be described as one hell of a run from Hoka this year. It costs $150, a slight bump from the current Clifton 9 that retails for $145.
