The Shoes That Just Won the Boston Marathon Look WILD

Are competition-grade laceless running shoes poised to disrupt the industry?

The 2024 Boston Marathon is over. For the second straight year in a row, Kenyan running savant and two-time Olympic silver medalist Hellen Obiri won the women’s race, most recently with a finishing time of 2:22:37.

It’s another epic feather in the cap for the legendary runner (and mom) who also won the New York City and Boston Marathon last year, a feat no other female runner had accomplished since 1989.

Though her time this year at Boston wasn’t particularly notable for an elite runner like Obiri, given that she was technically a minute slower than last year, what did stand out were the shoes she ran in. Click over to the third slide in Instagram gallery below to get a closer look.

Unsurprisingly, she wore shoes from Swiss performance brand On, given she’s been a paid ambassador for the company since 2022. But the shoes she wore from On during the 2024 Boston Marathon are unlike anything we’ve seen. They don’t even have laces.

Not much is known right now about them beyond the obvious fact that they are clearly prototypes made specifically for Obiri.

The_Secret_Shoe, an Instagram account known for spotting and revealing yet-to-be-release running shoes, also shared images in the post embedded below, which makes the shoe’s upper appear taller than a typical laceless sneaker, almost like a booty.

Aesthetically, we have seen details like the sizeable partial O logo on the outside of the existing Cloudmonster Hyper. The shape of the cutouts in the mysterious marathon shoes midsole is closer to the CloudTec Phase dominos found on models like On’s Cloudsurfer. But we’re bound to know more about her kicks sooner or later.

Laceless running shoes offering elite, competition-grade performance capabilities would easily qualify as one of the most significant innovations in running shoe technology in quite some time.

For now, On is having fun trolling the running world about them. The caption of the company’s account celebrating her 2024 Boston Marathon win acknowledges the shoes with a single magic wang emoji.
