The Best Shoe Adidas Makes Just Got Even More Impressive

The first technical update to one of the world’s fastest shoes packs even more of its signature ingredient.

The word “best” gets thrown around a lot. But it’s hard to argue against the output of the Adizero Adios Pro Evo — Adidas’s premiere marathon racer released in late 2023.

It boasts the brand’s fastest foam formulation and clocks in at less than five grams per shoe (less than your standard smartphone).

As advanced as its tech may be, though, it’s not hard to understand the premise.

In simplest terms, the Adizero Adios Pro Evo is built to win marathons and break records, two things it’s accomplished in spades over the last year and a half — including a world record in the women’s marathon (since overtaken), as well as the Olympic record on the men’s side, among dozens of other accomplishments.

Now, Adidas’s is promising even higher levels of performance with the shoe’s first technical update since 2023.

Even more foam

The Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 retains many aspects that made its predecessor one of the fastest shoes on the planet and simply doubles down on its special sauce.

As for ingredients, the new model combines the brand’s uncompressed Lightstrike Pro Evo foam and energy rods (in place of a plate design), both paired with a rocker placed at 60 percent the length of the shoe (the same featured in the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1).

However, the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 adds an extra 3mm of foam to the forefoot, reducing the heel-to-toe drop to just 3mm (down from 6mm).

According to Adidas, the change has no bearing on the overall weight — the shoe still weighs a bafflingly light five ounces — but improves the overall energy return by a whopping five percent.

“Working alongside our elite athletes like former world record holder Yomif Kejelcha, we’ve developed a shoe that delivers more energy return and a more efficient running economy with no compromise on agility,” said Patrick Nava, a vice president at Adidas Running, in a press release.

A new outsole

The other big change jumping into the new generation is a redesigned outsole that swaps the ultrasmooth rubber compound of the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1 for a grid-like pattern.

Though the effects of the adjustment will largely go unseen, the brand promises improved traction on the roads — a welcome considering the variable conditions a runner may experience over the course of a 26.2-mile race.

It’s also not a total shocker, considering some of Adidas’s top athletes have previously raced in custom versions Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1 with one-off outsoles.

Pricing and availability

The Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 will be available on April 29 for $500 — the same price as the first generation — in a silver metallic launch colorway.

The brand has not confirmed a total number of pairs set to be sold as part of this initial batch, only that it’s limited (and, thus, likely to sell out in seconds).

A wider release is scheduled for fall marathon season, which kicks of in late September with the Berlin Marathon.
