These May Be the Best New Gym Shoes of 2019

These gym-specific sneakers are the ideal new shoe for 2019 fitness endeavors.

I recently went to the gym in my running sneakers and was quickly reminded just how unstable those could be. Single leg squats, lunges and anything alternating had me wondering if I should take my shoes off and work with flat feet. Depending on what type of workouts you enjoy, the proper pair of gym shoes can help you run faster on the treadmill, lift heavier weights and move quickly through ladder drills and rope climbs. Under Armour dropped the UA TriBase Reign sneaker this week aimed directly at gym-goers.

I wore these to box and weight lift and was pleasantly surprised with how they moved. There’s no removable sock liner, but there’s plenty of cushion beneath the toes, and a bit of a divet in the heel of the shoe, so you feel like it’s cradling your foot. The upper is surprisingly breathable for how sturdy and thick it seems. A ripstop material and mesh combo upper are sure to help with rope climbs.

The shining moment of the shoes is when you’re in plank or pushup position — the full rubber outsole means your feet stay in place, no matter how much sweat is on the ground — so you can hold that plank for longer and eke out one more pushup. The 2-mm offset is low, so that you can feel stable in squats and the shoes weigh 10.3 ounces, so you have a bit of heft (but not much) to feel connected to the ground.

While you can’t purchase these just yet, they’ll be available just after the holidays. Starting December 26, you can order these training-specific sneakers, hit the gym and crush some goals for 2019.
