Last year, Nike was pushing to break the two-hour marathon barrier (#Breaking2). Eliud Kipchoge worked with Nike to develop the Zoom Vaporfly Elite, with enough technology in them to help him run four percent faster. And starting tomorrow, you can purchase the Pegasus Turbo, which brings that technology to an everyday runner.
While the Vaporfly Elite sneakers are incredibly fast (Kipchoge ran a 2:00:25 in them) they’re unattainable for non-elite runners. The closest consumers can get to the Vaporfly Elite is the Vaporfly 4%, which retails for $250, and even then the sneaker shouldn’t be worn for everyday running — they are built for race days. You need a sneaker you can run every day so that you can prep for the race. This is where the Pegasus Turbo comes in. The foam is a combo of the React foam and the ZoomX foam (found in the 4%). The ZoomX foam is supposed to be the lightest Nike foam to date and deliver 85 percent energy return.
After two quick 3-milers in the sneaker, I can say that the shape is just like the Pegasus 35, but the upper is lighter and less supportive. If you’re familiar with the Pegasus family and enjoy running in those shoes, the Pegasus Turbo fits the same way — it’s very true to size. The bounce of the Turbo is similar to the Epic Reacts and overall feels great. Stay tuned for a full review early next week.
