This year, Amazon is offering big discounts on tons of the most popular smart TVs from top brands including Samsung, LG, Sony and more. A lesson on TV tech geek-speak is a good place to start before you shop, as there’s a mound of jargon to wade through, and a thorough understanding will help inform your buying decision. 4K, also known as ultra-high-definition (UHD), has four times the pixels of, say, an older HD 1080p TV. 8K TVs have four times the pixels of 4K, but they’re extremely pricey, plus there isn’t a ton of content out there for them. Most 4K TVs have HDR — or high dynamic range — which translates to superior contrast.

You’ll also see OLED (organic light-emitting diode) and QLED (quantum dot LED) TVs on the market. Without getting too far into the weeds, the latter is essentially a souped-up LED TV, and the former skips the LED backlight in favor of light emitted from millions of individual pixels, which is a newer technology.

Some brands support OLED and others QLED, and there are pros and cons to each depending on your TV viewing preferences (are you a gamer or a cinephile?) when it comes to contrast, color, viewing angles and brightness.

What makes this Sony worth the extra few hundred bucks beyond the midpriced option above is an exceptional contrast ratio for an extra-sharp display combined with rich, full audio. Like all 2021 Sony TVs, it uses Google TV as its platform for access to all your streaming services. 

It also has a 120Hz refresh rate along with two HDMI 2.1 ports for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, which makes it a great choice for gamers.

This TV is a true standout on our list, a first-in-class OLED TV, with a speedy processor and knock-your-socks-off 4K HDR images for a stellar picture with deep black shades and vibrant colors, along with stellar, solid sound quality.  

Gamers are sure to appreciate the four HDMI 2.1 ports for multiple consoles, including the PlayStation 5 and both Xbox series X and S, plus lightning-fast response time thanks to an automatic low-latency mode. There’s also a new Game Mode—essentially a suite of gaming controls for easy access.

It achieves this status because its LEDs are incredibly small — 1/40th in thickness of a regular LED — which means they can be clustered more closely together, delivering unmatched precision in depth of color and contrast. Its infinity screen offers sharpness at every edge, too. 

Samsung’s AI upscaling is part of the package, taken to the next level combined with its 8K processor, plus it features sound tracking that follows objects across the screen for an intense audio experience.

For a true home theater experience, this gorgeous, bezel-less, ultra-thin 77-inch TV from Samsung’s Gallery Series is your best bet. Of course, you’ll want exceptional wide-angle viewing with full intense color from end-to-end for your home theater — and on that the LG GX certainly delivers.
