coway purifier gear patrol full leadCourtesy

Coway Mighty Air Purifier
Save $68: On the cusp of allergy season, a timely deal: the Coway Mighty air purifier is marked down $68 at Amazon.

Recommended by everyone from the Wirecutter to Home Air Guides, the Mighty boasts a four-stage filtration system, washable pre-filter and “eco mode.” It’s not ideal for big rooms — Coway recommends placing it in spaces no bigger than 361 square feet — but it’s the right choice for most bedrooms and city apartments. The Mighty is already significantly less expensive than the competition, and today its discounted below last year’s Prime Day price. — Will Price

Acacia-Outdoor-Furniture-Gear-Patrol-lead-full

Cheap Outdoor Furniture
Save 25-75%: No one would blame you for prioritizing indoor furniture to outdoor furniture when filling out a home. But, with warmer months fast approaching (or already here for some states), now is the moment to get at least something on the patio, porch or balcony.

That’s where Houzz’s Mid-Season Sale comes in, with a few thousand products marked down anywhere from 25 to 75 percent off. And while there are deals in nearly every furniture category, the markdowns on outdoor dining sets and weatherproof sofas and couches are the most noteworthy. The Mid-Season Sale will run until May 12. — Will Price

Snow-Peak-Umbrella-Gear-Patrol-lead-full

Snow Peak Collapsible Umbrella
Save 40%: It’s easy to leave your umbrella at home when your only option is a three-foot-long behemoth that doesn’t fit in your work bag. But any time an afternoon thunderstorm rolls into town, you probably find yourself wishing you’d brought it — or had bought one to keep in your office as well.

That’s the real joy of a compact and lightweight umbrella: you can drop it into your briefcase, backpack or messenger bag and forget it’s even in there (until the next mid-day storm, anyway). This specific model from Snow Peak — one of our favorite brands — measures only nine inches folded, weighs just under five ounces and is designed to collapse during heavy wind gusts rather than breaking or ripping, meaning it’ll get you through the season and many more to come. Best of all, it’s on sale at Nordstrom for just $34 today — that’s savings of more than 30 percent.

Fitbit-Versa-Smartwatch-Deal-gear-patrol-lead-full

Fitbit Versa Smartwatch
Save $20: Fitbit’s entry-level smartwatch, the Versa, is $20 off at Best Buy right now. The normally $200 smartwatch is a great option for anybody who doesn’t want to spend big on an Apple Watch, but still wants an easy way to track steps, calories burned, sleep and heart rate. Other than its looks — the Versa has a slim and lightweight design — a big selling point of this Fitbit smartwatch is its battery life; it can last several days, even if you wear it to bed. On the downside, the Versa doesn’t have a built-in GPS, meaning it’s not quite as capable a fitness tracker as other smartwatches.

Patagonia-Nine-Trails-36L-Backpack-gear-patrol-lead-full

Patagonia Nine Trails Backpack
Save 55%: While some hiking backpacks cram as many functions into as few liters as possible, others opt for the opposite tack: achieve utility through minimalism. This was precisely what Patagonia strove for in its Nine Trails packs, which launched last spring, and the company (as usual) landed its mark.

Instead of multiple compartments and various access points, the Nine Trails backpack has one spacious main compartment that’s accessed through a large U-shaped zipper. On the exterior are multiple stretchy sleeve-style pockets for storing items that need to be accessed routinely on the trail, like extra layers, water bottles and snacks. That’s essentially it, and the backpack is a success because of that simplicity (it’s one of our favorite daypacks for hiking). The bag isn’t without a couple of extras though — there are small zippered stash pockets inside, on the top and on the hipbelt, and a hydration sleeve with a port for the hose.

Compared to other hiking bags in Patagonia’s line, the Nine Trails is still new, but as long as you don’t mind last season’s colors — Classic Red and Sprouted Green — you can find the bag on sale for up to 55 percent off at Backcountry in both 20- and 28-liter capacities. — Tanner Bowden

Clarks-Originals-Desert-Boot-gear-patrol-full-lead

Clarks Desert Boots
Save 30%:Few shoes have the kind of pedigree assigned to the Clarks Desert Boot — a simple suede chukka inspired by the crepe-soled boots worn by British officers in World War II. Sold by Clarks since the early 50s, the boots later became a favorite of style icons like Steve McQueen and Bob Dylan. Today, it’s the brand’s best-selling shoe, beloved for its unique combination of comfort, durability and polish. And, right now, you can score a pair in taupe suede for 30 percent off the normal asking price ($40 savings). — Jack Seemer

breville bes880bss barista touch espresso maker gear patrol full leadBreville

Breville Barista Touch
Save 37%: Breville’s collection of espresso machines strives to offer a machine fit for every level of coffee nerd. Today on Amazon, its most frugal touchscreen model is at an all-time low price.

The Barista Touch, which usually runs $1,000 or more, is outfitted with a built-in grinder, automatic dose control, a milk frothing wand and a touchscreen that allows you to customize and save drink profiles. It also uses Breville’s ThermoJet heating system, which primes the machine for shot pulling in three seconds or less.

It is worth noting that this machine doesn’t have an auto-tamp function, a vital and often misunderstood step in the espresso making process (ChefSteps does a good job explaining how to tamp properly). — Will Price

Vasque-Clarion-88-Hiking-Boot-gear-patrol-lead-full

Vasque Clarion ’88 Hiking Boot
Save 25%: It used to be that only self-proclaimed “outdoorsy folks” with a deep knowledge of vintage gear could spot the value in a battered pair of Bean Boots or a well-worn Patagonia fleece at thrift stores. Now it seems as though everyone is into retro outdoor gear, whether the aim is to wear it ironically in the field or make a style statement in the streets. Recently though, the brands have caught onto the nostalgia, and are now digging into product archives to make the old new again.

Some of it, like The North Face’s Rage ’92 collection, aims for style. Others products integrate decades of technical innovations into dated silhouettes to make items that work as well as they look. Vasque’s Clarion ’88 hiking boot is one such example; the boot first debuted over 30 years ago, but Vasque brought it back last year with a durable waterproof upper and Vibram rubber outsole that make it a reliable model for trail use to this day. It’s on sale at REI for 25 percent off right now, along with a full range of other models from brands like Merrel, Keen, Salomon and more. — Tanner Bowden

Julbo-Glacier-Glasses-Gear-Patrol-Slide-1Henry Phillips

Julbo Cham Aviator Sunglasses
Save $50: Originally released in 1972, Julbo’s Cham Sunglasses are the direct result of the exploits of a nearly unknown mountain climber. His name was Yannick Seigneur, and he was the first person to ascend Makalu, the fifth-tallest mountain in the world by its West Pillar Route, among other feats. He also helped Julbo, a decades-old leader in mountain eye protection, test and refine eyewear. The Cham Sunglasses are a direct result of that collaboration.

In recent years, Julbo revived the Cham from its archives. Leather eye shields and nose pieces aren’t used commonly on expeditions today, but they do lend themselves to nostalgic mountain style. Right now, they’re 30 percent off at The Drop. — Tanner Bowden

Victorinox-Chefs-Knife-Gear-Patrol-Lead-full

Victorinox Fibrox Kitchen Knives
Save 25%: Ultra-cheap kitchen knives are a crapshoot — some are great values, others aren’t worth considering. Generally speaking, it’s a category rife with Chromium-rich knives that are shiny, totally resistant to water damage but chip and dull easily. Of the thirteen discounted knives, the chef’s knife gets the most press. Recommended by Cook’s Illustrated, it’s tough, comes with a less-cumbersome handle than other frugal options and takes well to honing steel. The knife usually runs about $45, but can be had for $32 on Drop. — Will Price

Both tools rank highly because they’re incredibly easy to use with one hand, making them practical for a wide variety of jobs and tasks, but the Free P2 edged out the Center-Drive because each one of its tools deploys with one hand, not just the pliers.
