Osprey-Packs-Stratos-24L-Backpack-gear-patrol-full-leadOsprey

My Favorite Daypack Is Currently on Sale
Save 25%: Unlike my stance on expedition bags, I never used to give much thought to daypacks. I’d prep for any outing that didn’t require the capacity of my 65-liter trekking pack by dumping my things into whatever school bag or ski pack was at-hand. As a kid, that was a forest green L.L.Bean backpack with my initials stitched to its face, and later in life, it was a multi-sport bag by Dakine.

Oh, what a world I was missing. Last fall, I picked up Osprey’s Stratos in its 24-liter volume (there’s also a larger 34-liter version), and it has since changed how I think about the daypack. For instance, I had no idea that my back could be anything but hot and sweaty, and didn’t realize that hip support is still crucial, even on short hikes.

The Stratos is outfitted with all the pockets, compression straps and access points you’d expect from a backpack company — especially one with a golden reputation among long-distance thru-hikers — but the standout for me has been its mesh back panel. It’s raised and tensioned away from the pack’s main vestibule, which provides a comfy trampoline-like feel and allows lots of air to flow between my back and the bag, which minimizes the sweaty back issue I had used to view as unavoidable. The mesh also integrates into the hipbelt, wrapping its arms around my lower torso like a well-studied dance partner for a fit that’s more comfortable than any I’ve known before.

Right now Backcountry is holding a Memorial Day Sale, and the Stratos is currently 25 percent off. It’s perfect timing for a deal — just in time for hiking season. — Tanner Bowden

YLighting-Deal-gear-patrol-lead-fullYLighting

YLighting Memorial Day Sale
Save 40%: YLighting is an online purveyor of high-design lighting (think Design Within Reach, but just lights). As you might expect, much of its wares are typically pricey and out of reach for the normal, everyday buyer. This weekend that all changes — a least a little.

The company, which has 20 percent off sales quite often, cut prices to up to 40 percent for its Memorial Day sale, which is live right now. — Will Price

YETI-Hopper-BackFlip-24L-gear-patrol-lead-fullYETI

Yeti Hopper Backflip
Save $60: Earlier this year, when Yeti announced a new collection of rugged products it was a burly camping chair called the Hondo that became the newsworthy standout. But it wasn’t the only product revealed — the new collection included wine tumblers, a magnetic waterproof pouch, a tote (which may turn out to be a sleeper), and a backpack version of its popular Hopper soft cooler called the Backflip.

Yeti is credited as the originator of the overbuilt, everything-proof hard-sided cooler and owning one has become imbued with a particular symbolic status. The brand has had to live up to its own reputation with every successive product, and its soft coolers were no exception. The Hopper series has done that, with a puncture-resistant soft exterior called DryHide and super-strong leak-proof zippers. Its soft coolers are lighter and notably more portable, which may make them even more effective in providing practical everyday use.

The Backflip gives the Hopper series even more potential with the addition of backpack straps that make carrying a fully-loaded cooler across longer distances more feasible. The Backflip can accommodate 20 cans at a two-to-one can-to-ice ratio and has multiple handles for hauling and additional webbing for lashing.

Sales on Yeti products are rare, especially on something as new as the Hopper Backflip. Right now, however, Backcountry is offering its customers the chance to take 20 percent off one full-priced item during its Memorial Day Sale and the Backflip, one of Yeti’s newest products, is included in the deal. Use the code MEMORIALDAY20 at checkout, or click the small banner at the top of the screen to apply the discount. — Tanner Bowden

Deal-Moto-Gloves-Gear-Patrol-Lead-FullRevzilla

Summer Motorcycle Glove Sale

One important piece of gear people tend to shed first is their gloves — huge mistake. Now consider doing that with your bare hands. There are motorcycle gloves out there made specifically for warm weather riding and today there’s a whole selection on sale at Revzilla.com. So, now you have no excuse to ride bare-handed this summer. — Bryan Campbell

Osprey-Packs-Levity-60L-gear-patrol-full-leadOsprey

Osprey Levity Backpack
Save $54: Last summer, when our Outdoors and Fitness Desk attended the biannual tradeshow called Outdoor Retailer — a showcase of thousands of upcoming products and gadgets — we were especially impressed with one backpack out of the hundreds that we saw: the Osprey Levity.

Why? Because it’s an ultralight backpack — Osprey gave it the slightly more hyperbolic “superultralight” descriptor — that packs plenty of features for mainstream hikers to appreciate. Like a pocket-equipped lid, a large expanding front sleeve, side holsters for a water bottle and other gear, and exterior paracord that can be used to lash essentials to the outside of the bag. And the Levity has a mesh back panel that emphasizes comfort and breathability.

Most backpacks that weigh in under two pounds (the Levity is 1.85 pounds in the 45-liter version and 1.95 pounds for the 60-liter) make sacrifices to get there — that often means fewer features and comfort, or expensive materials that drive the price up. These backpacks are often designed by custom makers and have hardcore enthusiasts in mind. However, Osprey has found a firm middle ground in the Levity; it’s still an ultralight bag that won’t be for everyone, but it can also act as an affordable and user-friendly introduction to the often-intimidating world of lightweight backpacking.

Speaking of price, the 60-liter Levity retails for $270, and because it’s a brand new product, it won’t be found in the sale section any time soon. But, right now Backcountry is holding a sale in which you can take 20 percent off one full-priced item using the code MEMORIALDAY20. That can be applied to the Levity, bringing its total down to $216. — Tanner Bowden

Bonavita-Electric-Kettle-1L-gear-patrol-lead-fullBonavita

Bonavita Electric Pour Over Kettle
Save 52%: Walking the pour over path requires gear, and that gear begets more gear, and that gear makes you wonder if you need another bit of gear and eventually making a cup of coffee becomes a $1,000 endeavor.

But just after choosing your pour over mechanism (the most popular being Chemex, Hario and Kalita), you need something to pour the water onto the grinds — and no, dumping the whole lot of water all at once is not a great idea. A full dump of water doesn’t allow your ground beans to aerate, de-gas or bloom, all fancy terms that, when the appropriate time is taken to pour water over with a bit more finesse, make for much better cups of coffee. Finesse is best achieved by way of a kettle with a gooseneck spout (basically a very thin spout), and that’s exactly what this heavily discounted Bonavita Electric Kettle has.

The kettle, which usually retails for $60, is $30 right now, comes with a two-year warranty, has an auto-shutoff function and brings water to perfect coffee temperature in about 3 minutes (boils in 5!). — Will Price

Dyson-SV11-V7-gear-patrol-lead-fullDyson

Dyson V7 Vacuum
Save: $260: I won’t presume, but I for one am not driven to pick up the very newest in vacuums like I might with sneakers or whiskey. But, I do live in an apartment with other humans and dogs and do see the need to have in my possession a vacuum that’s worth a shit.

Thus, eBay brings us Dyson V7 for $191. Released in 2017, the V7 is a monster of a cordless vacuum (not quite as monstrous as the V10, but $500 cheaper) when it comes to suction, function, head rotation and clean dirt ejection. It was launched as the budget version of the V8, so it has a slightly weaker battery and suction in comparison, but is plenty to suck up all manner of everyday dirt, dust and dog hair.

This V7 deal is for manufacturer-refurbished models only, but fear not — refurbs are stringently regulated by both Dyson and eBay, as there’s no incentive for either to sell a shitty version of the product.

To get to the $191 price (that’s with shipping & taxes), use code PMEMDAY at checkout. — Will Price

Tempur-Pedic-Topper-gear-patrol-full-leadTempur Pedic

Tempur-Pedic Mattress Topper
Save up to 47%: Since the dawn of the memory foam mattress, two complaints have bubbled to the surface time and time again — they sleep hot and they don’t provide enough support. Getting a Tempur-Pedic’s mattress topper solves the latter.

By placing a memory foam mattress topper on a traditional spring-frame mattress you get the more solid back and lumbar support you need, and the magnificent melt-into-your-bed effect of the memory foam. The Tempur-Pedic mattress toppers can also just as easily be rolled up and thrown down at a campsite.

All sizes of the Tempur-Pedic topper are on sale now on Amazon for at least 25 percent off the typical price, with some nearly 50 percent off. And as for the second issue of sleeping hot, we recommend extra crisp Snowe percale sheets or a set of Rough Linen sheets. — Will Price
