Whether they admit it or not, knife aficionados are as obsessed with style as the mobs that line up for limited-edition sneaker drops. But instead of flashy logos, they covet Damascus steel, anodized thumb studs and carbon fiber inlays. Judged by its description alone, Boker and CountyComm’s Albatross, which is currently $100 off at Drop, does not fit this bill.
The most fitting label for the Albatross is not flattering: chunky. The folding knife, which has a 2.5-inch blade made of high-quality VG-10 steel that’s a mash-up between a straight back and a clip point, is both wide and thick. Its titanium frame-lock scale is also burly at nearly 4 millimeters in thickness (in knife terms, that’s a lot). And yet, the Albatross weighs only 4.5 ounces, thanks in part to a marbled carbon fiber handle scaled to match the titanium.
That carbon fiber handle is also how, against all odds, the Albatross manages to achieve beauty. Its layers of black and gray fibers are disorganized and unrefined, allowing them to play on those same qualities in the blade with its shape and stonewash finish. Knowing that renowned Danish designer Jens Ansø created it, all this begins to make sense.
