One of the sneaky-good deals to come early this holiday season is on the Lenovo Smart Display. If you don’t know what it is, it’s essentially a bigger-screen version of the Google Home Hub ($149), but it also sounds a little better and has a camera (which could be a good thing or bad thing, depending if you value privacy over video calling). It was released earlier in 2018 and was designed as the perfect smart speaker – or “smart display” – for your kitchen, as you can easily summon cooking videos on YouTube.
And that’s the real beauty of this device. Since Lenovo and Google have a really good relationship, this product essentially functions exactly like the Google Home Hub. It uses Google Assistant to accurately and intelligently answer your questions and dish out commands. And since Google owns YouTube, you can instantly summon YouTube videos with your voice, which is a big selling point over Amazon’s Echo Show. If you have a Google Photos account, you can also set a slideshow of your photos to be your home screen, essentially making this work as a digital picture frame. Bottom line: if you want a smart display and/or you’re building out a smart home around Google Assistant, the Lenovo Smart Display is great.
There two models of the Lenovo Smart Display, an 8-inch and a larger 10-inch model. The latter is still going for $250, which feels expensive, but the smaller model’s $200 price has been slashed in half – yes, half – and now it’s well cheaper than the Google Home Hub. (The Google Home Hub has a slightly smaller 7-inch screen, for those wondering).
This deal runs through Black Friday on Best Buy’s website, but it’s also worth noting that you can get the same Lenovo Smart Display for $180 on Lenovo’s website, but they’ll throw in two free Google Home Minis (which normally go for $50/each, but are $25/each during the holidays).
