These New Down Jackets Are Made for the Worst Weather

Maybe you’re familiar with Best Made Co.’s painted axes. They are, perhaps, the brand’s most iconic product, made in the United States with American-sourced steel and wood with time-tested patterns. They were the company’s very first product too, which is why the brand and tool are now so closely associated. But Best Made Co., which is about to enter its tenth year, is more than an axe company — it makes tool boxes, barometers, bags and more — and is taking a dedicated approach to clothing, an initiative that’s being spearheaded by Joseph Pollard, a former design director at Ralph Lauren. The latest apparel collection includes Japanese denim pants, wool button-up shirts, a collaboration with Stetson and, as of this week, two new down jackets.

Best Made Co.’s down jackets — there are a quarter-zip pullover and a three-layer parka — aren’t the lightweight, ripstop nylon versions that weigh in the single-digit ounces and compress down to the size of a grapefruit; they’re heavy-duty, with a cotton-nylon blended shell and 850-fill down inside. The team tested them in the Andes Mountains near the Argentinian town of Bariloche with the Mallmann brothers (you may know chef Francis Mallmann from Chef’s Table) to ensure that they could handle wind, snow, rain and everything in between. The two pieces may seem like a far cry from a Best Made Co. axe but Peter Buchanan-Smith, the company’s founder, sees them as more similar than different.

The Down Pullover and 3L Down Parka are brand new items, but Best Made Co. is including them in its current holiday sale, which offers a 30 percent discount on a handful of things — it’s well over $100 in savings for these top-tier pieces of apparel. The sale also includes wool fleece vests and jackets, camp blankets, button-up shirts and much more.
