Patagonia made its stance on Black Friday clear back in 2011 when it famously bought a full-page ad in the New York Times that depicted one of its fleece jackets along with the directive, in large capital letters, “DON’T BUY THIS JACKET.” Instead of hawking heavy discounts on a holiday emblematic of consumerism, Patagonia chose to promote its Common Threads Initiative, the goal of which is to reduce rampant buying to mitigate humankind’s environmental footprint.
So no, even seven years later, don’t expect doorbuster deals on Patagonia’s website or in its stores. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still find the brand’s best-loved products heavily discounted elsewhere. Through Cyber Monday, Backcountry is offering 30-percent off a wide range of Patagonia apparel and equipment (as well as up to 30-percent off many other brands, including Black Diamond and The North Face). Casual items like its Lightweight Better Sweater and technical pieces like the Nano Puff Jacket are up for grabs, as well as one of the best rugged carry-on bags available.
