When my feet were big enough, I got my first pair of vintage Red Wing Pecos boots from my dad. The brown leather roper style was a little different than traditional cowboy boots — instead of featuring a taller, angled riding heel, roper boots have a shorter heel, designed to handle a day of walking. Flash-forward to the present, and I now own Red Wing Heritage Pecos boots in roughout Hawthorne Muleskinner leather and Black Abilene leather — they’re easily my favorite style.
Though many people associate Red Wing with building work boots for farmers and factory employees in the Upper Midwest, the company also had an office in Dallas that opened in the early 1920s. To serve the Texas market — where men preferred pull-on riding boots — Red Wing developed its own version of this style in the ‘30s. By the ‘50s, it had refined the style and given it the name of a small Texan town. And while the Pecos boot was developed in the rugged West, it quickly became a favorite across the country due to its simple silhouette, comfortable fit and durability.
