Plenty of watches that aren’t the Omega Speedy have been worn into space — we’ve even written a cool roundup of our favorites. And one of the coolest space watches of all was the Bulova chronograph that served as a backup when Dave Scott’s NASA-issued Speedy broke during the Apollo 15 mission in 1971. The Bulova kept perfect time throughout that mission and lived on to fetch over $1.6 million at auction in 2015. The brand’s Accutron technology, memorialized in one of my favorite Mad Men product pitches of all time, was also used in the instrument panels of spacecraft flown through the 1960s and 70s. Needless to say, the Accutron tech has proved its worth.
This gorgeous homage to the original Lunar Pilot chronograph features an Ultra High Frequency quartz movement, nifty paddle pushers, a commemorative engraved case back and a very-slightly-raised sapphire crystal. With a case diameter of 45mm it’s definitely on the large side, even for a sporty chrono with a 50m water resistance rating, but maybe a timepiece this significant (and flat-out cool) deserves more than to just “blend well” with your board-meeting suits.
