Why do we like pocket knives so much? It’s hard to say, and maybe it depends on individual knives. Some we like because they’re made pretty — with a handle inlaid with bone or turquoise or a blade featuring a gorgeously-grainy wash. Others we prize purely for their functionality; there’s nothing wrong with a $20 folder that may not last a lifetime as long as it does its job well (although we’d always recommend spending a little more for lasting quality).
Maybe the reasons why we like pocket knives don’t matter at all — that is, in part, the joy of collecting.
