You can still buy a Sony Walkman these days, it’s true, but they aren’t the Walkmans of yesteryear that play cassette tapes. Instead, Sony’s current crop of Walkmans are portable high-res audio players that look similar to an iPad Touch. The NW-A45 Walkman is one of the company’s newer models — released in 2017 — and it’s also one of the most budget-friendly you can find. It has a built-in amplifier and is able to play 24-bit audio at 96kHz, which is significantly higher-resolution than what you’d get from a CD player. And it has 16GB of storage with a microSD slot in case you need more. For musicians, audiophiles on a budget, and or anybody who wants to take the first steps into hi-fi, this device is a pretty good upgrade from your smartphone.
