Now in Patagonia’s Sale Section, the Last Jacket I’ll Ever Have to Buy

I’ve taken mine backpacking through Chilean Patagonia and continue to wear it daily in New York City.

Years ago, when I decided to kick the East Coast and move to a mountain town in Wyoming, I observed one thing very quickly: everybody owned a puffy jacket. So, within my first few months of living there, I adhered to the region’s groupthink and bought Patagonia’s Nano Puff Hoody. It was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

In Wyoming, the Nano Puff made sense. It was lightweight, warm and looked good enough to conform to the pre-accepted style norms of the tech-spec-savvy community (mine was forest green with a bright orange interior). But even after I left Wyoming, the Nano Puff functioned practically and aesthetically everywhere. I wore it backpacking through Chilean Patagonia and continue to wear it daily in New York City (if in a somewhat conscious attempt to subvert the idea that the only fashionable color to wear in Manhattan is black). In fact, wherever I go, my Nano Puff comes with me simply because it inhabits almost zero space in my backpack, provides padding for my camera and comes in handy more often than not — it also makes a great pillow on long flights.

The Nano Puff has become so integral to my everyday life that this fall I decided to pick up the pullover version of the jacket too. Not because I needed it — my old green coat, battered as it has become over the years, is still in great shape and Patagonia’s zero-questions repair program will take care of any fixes as it continues to age — but because I know I’ll use it. Over, and over, and over again.

Right now, Patagonia is having its end of season 50 percent off sale, and while sizes and colors are already limited, there are still a few Nano Puff pieces left to be had.
