When it comes to travel, I like to be optimistically prepared. For example, I always pack swim trunks, because you never know when you’ll be invited to a random hot tub party. (I finally got invited to a random hot tub party last year, and yes, I was ready.) I always pack a suit even if nothing calls for one on the itinerary because you don’t want to say no to an impromptu Noma invite just because the nicest thing you have in your bag is a Rhude T-shirt. And I always bring some sort of waterproof shoe because wet feet in a foreign city are the worst kind of wet feet. And I’m a runner, so in addition to the other shoes that the trip calls for, I’ll have mildly outlandish running kicks that only look normal when you’re running. All of this optimistic preparedness means that my luggage is often 75% shoes.

This percentage has gone down significantly with my discovery of the all-black (or teal, red and black) Nike Pegasus Trail 3 Gore-Tex, which is on sale right now for $120 — down by 25 percent from the original price of $160. And you don’t even need a code or anything to score the savings.

This serious running shoe is capable on the trail, but can also handle a 10K on the pavement without any issue. I’ve put in around 250 miles, mostly on the road, in the previous generation Trail 2 Gore-Tex. That’s something that I wouldn’t have been able to do in a more ruggedized trail runner. The Pegasus is also waterproof, while somehow simultaneously being extremely breathable. You’re never dying to get them off of your feet at the end of the day. Most significantly, the design is subtle enough to wear with civilian clothing, and I’ve managed to make my own pair work with certain suits as well. And man, I never thought I would be the kind of person that wears running sneakers when they go through the airport, but I’m that guy now. It’s like Global Entry for your feet.

If you’re a traveler, who likes to run or walk swiftly but also wants something you can maybe go hiking in, wear in the rain, and toss on with everything from shorts to jeans to a suit, get these. With proper outfit planning, you could probably make your entire trip happen with this one shoe. Just don’t forget the swim trunks.
