This Legendary Toyota Sports Car Was Killed Off in 2006. It May Be Coming Back

Rumors persist that the Celica could return — and they come from Toyota itself.

Picture this. The year is 2003. I’m a senior at a small high school in rural Maine. The first Fast & Furious movie premiered just two years earlier. And the coolest car in my school’s parking lot is a brand-new Toyota Celica.

The 2000s Celica was a wild-looking car. With its oversized wing, hood scoop and dramatic headlights, it looked like it had been designed by Dominic Toretto himself.

But as cool as I thought that car was, not enough buyers agreed, as Toyota’s sporty liftback was discontinued for good in 2006 after a 36-year, seven-generation run.

Now, nearly two full decades later, new rumors suggest the Celica could finally be on its way back.

Toyota’s Boss Wants a New Celica

According to a new report from Motor Trend, Toyota chairman Aiko Toyoda told Toyota’s internal news outlet, the Toyota Times, that he “put in a request” last year for the marque to make a new Celica.

Before you get too excited, however, the report also states that Toyoda poured cold water on the idea in the next breath, noting that he can’t greenlight a car all by himself and further stating that even if Toyota does go along with his idea to make a new sporty coupe, it won’t necessarily be a new Celica.

What Might a New Celica Look Like?

Given Toyota’s general reluctance to dive headfirst into EV territory like its competition, there’s a good chance that the next Celica — if it does indeed exist — will be powered by a combustion engine. And we might already know what powerplant it will have under the hood.

A new report from Japanese automotive outlet Best Car (h/t Carscoops) states that a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (which Toyota recently confirmed it was developing alongside Mazda and Subaru) has already been completed and is destined for the reborn Celica, which would be a model within Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division.

The report also states that the engined makes upwards of 400 horsepower and would likely be paired with Toyota’s GR-Four all-wheel-drive system in the Celica GR.

Are We Really Getting a New Celica?

A 400-hp, AWD Celica with a traditional (possibly turbo?) engine would be a fever dream for car enthusiasts — it honestly sounds like the spiritual successor to the beloved All-Trac Turbo models of the ’80s and early ’90s — and I’ll be very surprised if Toyota actually makes such a car.

But who knows? Given the confirmation from Toyota that it is indeed producing new high-performance, economical ICE engines for something and its chairman’s desire to bring back the Celica, maybe the rural high schools in Maine will soon have a new coolest car in their parking lots.
