Does Subaru Have a Crop of Wild New Off-Roaders in the Works?

Trademark filings suggest more trail-oriented Subarus could be en route.

·

Subaru may have a host of new off-road adventure vehicles in store for us. A recent Autoguide search of the U.S. Patent Office’s database uncovered 12 new Subaru USPTO trademark applications for automotive-related names. They are, in alphabetical order: Accomplice, Everguide, Everpass, Getaway, Highrail, Highroad, Outsider, Trailhead, Trailseeker, Trailwind, Uncharted and Viewfinder.

Now, an automaker filing a trademark application doesn’t mean a term will make it to a production vehicle. But it’s usually a good bet that using a term is at least under serious consideration. After all, filing a trademark application would be a necessary step before slapping it on a new vehicle.

How would Subaru use these trademarks? We see a few potential options.

Subaru does have an onslaught of new EVs coming

Subaru plans to have a four-crossover EV lineup by 2026. That means three new vehicles are joining the Solterra. One is expected to be a version of Toyota’s new three-row electric SUV.

We’ve been presuming Subaru would lean heavily on existing branding (Outback EV, Ascent EV, etc.). But this host of new names makes us wonder if the automaker will instead give each of them their own bespoke badges. It’s possible you’ll spot a Subaru Everguide picking up the kids on the school run in a few years.

But the trademarks may make more sense as Subaru trims and packages

Without any inside knowledge, however, the names would seem to have more utility as potential trim levels and packages. We could see “Uncharted” referring to an even more robust off-roading lineup built off the Wilderness vehicles. “Trailhead,” in turn, could work as a cheaper package that provides some Wilderness appearance cues without the added capability.

The Subaru Solterra has little excess range to play with, but we could see Subaru wanting to offer a more off-road-focused version that doesn’t warrant the full-on Wilderness designation; “Highroad” could be a good name for such a vehicle. “Tailwind” could be a name for an upcoming line of Subaru hybrids; the new 2025 Forester is getting one, and we suspect the next-gen Outback will follow suit.

Could Subaru have some quasi-criminal plans in store for the WRX and BRZ?

Maybe the oddest name in the bunch is “Accomplice,” which only has one connotation: someone abetting a crime. (“Getaway” could also be interpreted in a similar context.) It’s unclear how either would be used in a positive context except as fire emoji-warranting packages for the WRX or BRZ. Would it be too on-the-nose to get Ansel Elgort to do the ads for that trim level?
