Welcome to Found, a series where classic goods are handpicked by Gear Patrol‘s writers and editors and ready are for a good home.
Adventure motorcycles are something akin to SUVs of the two-wheeled world — they have off-road capability, on-road civility and, most importantly, the ability to go for long stretches while hauling gear and keeping the rider (relatively) comfortable. Most consider the BMW R80G/S to be the genesis of the breed, being the first large-capacity bike to adapt to off-road conditions, and with the growing popularity of the legendary Dakar Rally, more bikes have followed in its wake. Today, there is no shortage of adventure bikes on the motorcycle market, but it’s the classic and hard-to-find models of the ’80s, ’90s and even the early aughts that truly inspire wanderlust — these are five you can buy, right now.
1988 BMW R100GS

What we like: The successor to the legendary R80G/S that dominated Dakar in the ’80s, the R100GS essentially made the old G/S even better, getting a bump in engine size, as well as upgraded fuel capacity, suspension and a “Paraleaver” drive unit, which negates the tendency for the rear of the bike to lift under heavy acceleration — a negative side effective of shaft-driven motorcycles.
From the seller: “All repairs completed by Max BMW and Revival Cycles. If there is a nicer one I have not seen it.”
