I don’t know about you, but for me, the biggest hurdle to getting an electric vehicle is the time it takes to refuel. For those lucky enough to have a garage and a compatible charger at home, refilling your EV’s battery can take hours.

Even if you have a Tesla Supercharger nearby, it still takes at least 15 minutes to add up to 200 miles to your battery. That’s not even a full charge for most modern electric cars and trucks.

Well, that could soon be a worry of the past, if the Mercedes-AMG Concept AMG GT XX has anything to say about it. This slick hypercar could usher in a future where owning an EV is just as convenient (if not more) than a traditional petrol-powered car.

Fill ‘er up!

The banner feature of this Mercedes-AMG concept is, admittedly, not nearly the most alluring or eye-catching part of it. However, it might be the most important to the future of EVs everywhere.

Derived from Formula 1 tech, this car boasts a completely new high-voltage battery. Per the brand, the “High Performance Electric Battery (HP.EB) delivers a high power output with exceptional repeatability, guaranteeing the vehicle’s outstanding overall performance.”

The aerodynamic fastback design is necessary, since this car can reach over 223 mph.

While that seems like a lot of hullabaloo, the most significant part of its advancements is its “very high average charging power of more than 850 kW at 1000 amperes over a wide range of the charging curve.” In layman’s terms, it can charge incredibly fast.

In fact, the brand suggests it can add up to 400 km (just under 250 miles) to the battery’s charge in just a five-minute charge. Not only is that a greater overall capacity than Tesla Superchargers promise (200 miles), but it’s also 200 percent faster (15 minutes).

This development could finally close the time-to-refuel gap between gasoline cars and EVs, making the latter just as convenient to own, even for people without access to an at-home charger. Of course, it has to be paired with a charger that can meet the output requirements, but it’s still a major boon.

Innovation from tip to tail

The battery tech is far from the only interesting thing happening with the Concept AMG GT XX. It’s important to note that, while it’s a four-door sedan, it’s also an all-electric hypercar, capable of reaching speeds of up to 360 kph (just a hair under 224 mph).

It does this by producing a power output of over 1,000 kW, which is roughly the equivalent of over 1,340 in traditional mechanical horsepower. Of course, all that power and speed might rip apart a lesser vehicle (or at least make for an incredibly uncomfortable, inefficient ride). But this car has other advancements to assist.

Obviously, the bodywork is highly aerodynamic, boasting a fastback body not normally seen in sedans. But there’s more, too. Take a gander at the wheels.

The active Aero Wheels are patented tech that “resolves the conflict between brake cooling, aerodynamic efficiency, and maximum range.” The five blades on the wheels can contract and close to help lower air resistance, improving range and reducing energy consumption.

The interior is also highly forward-thinking, including huge digital screens, a racing-inspired control scheme, five-point harness carbon fiber bucket seats adorned with “LaFiber” bio-based alternative leather (the door handles have a similar silk alternative), 3D-printed seat pads and so much more.

If there’s one phrase that properly describes this concept hypercar, it might be “absolutely bonkers.”

Trickle-down tech

Unfortunately, the Mercedes-AMG Concept AMG GT XX is a one-off concept, meaning the brand has no intention of selling it in its current form.

That said, the pioneering technology could have major implications for the future of EVs across the Mercedes-Benz catalog (and will likely push other marques to develop similar tech). It wouldn’t be absurd to expect the car’s fast-charging tech to make it into upcoming models.
