McLaren Makes Mountain Bikes Now. They’re Stupid Fast

Fitted with Pirelli tires, of course, the Extreme 600 and Sport 600 are the most powerful street-legal e-bikes on the market.

The name McLaren is synonymous with speed. From the British marque’s long and illustrious history in Formula 1 to its legendary record-breaking F1 road car to the bonkers hypercars such as the Speedtail that it produces today, odds are if your vehicle says “McLaren” on the side, it can absolutely fly.

Now, the brand has applied its speed-above-all-else philosophy to an entirely new vehicle segment. Moving from four wheels to two, McLaren has just unveiled its first line of electric mountain bikes (eMTB). And, as you’d expect from McLaren, these e-bikes are ridiculously fast. In fact, McLaren says they’re the most powerful street-legal e-bikes on the market.

McLaren Engineering Meets the Trail

McLaren’s inaugural eMTB offerings consist of four total models spread across two chassis: Extreme and Sport. All bikes have frames constructed of carbon fiber which McLaren says took its designers over 1,000 hours to engineer.

The frames are constructed in-house at McLaren and, in addition to their racing DNA, incorporate stylistic cues from McLaren racing cars, particulary the Extreme models, which are clad in McLaren’s distinct orange livery.

All four bikes are also shod in Pirelli Scorpion Enduro tires, naturally, continuing the longstanding partnership between McLaren Racing and the Italian outfit.

Industry-Leading Power

McLaren’s focus in developing its first e-bikes was to make them as fast and powerful as possible. To accomplish this feat, the top-spec versions of the Extreme and Sport bikes are powered by a custom-tuned mid-drive motor putting out 600W of normalized power, 852W of peak power and 161 Nm of torque — all numbers that set a new industry standard and allow the McLaren Extreme 600 and Sport 600 to rank as the most powerful eMTBs in their class.

The bikes’ impressive power output is controlled by the rider via a “carbon cockpit,” which is a fun way of referring to the digital dashboard integrated into the one-piece carbon fiber handlebar assembly. The dashboard’s color display allows you to track metrics and toggle settings, while also letting you select from one of five drive modes:

  • Off: No power assist, pure manual mountain biking
  • Eco: Conserves power, best for long rides
  • Trail: A medium setting that balances power and efficiency
  • Sport: Adds a boost of power for moments that demand it
  • Race: Maxes out power and torque for peak performance, allowing speeds up to 20mph on 600W models

Extreme or Sport?

The four models of McLaren’s e-bikes are the Extreme 600, Extreme 250, Sport 600 and Sport 250.

The numbers indicate the power levels, with the two 600 models receiving the ultra-powerful motors referenced earlier and the 250 models receiving a scaled-down 250W motor putting out a still-impressive 121Nm of torque. The 600 models also receive a larger 48V battery, with the 250 bikes making do with a 36V power source.

The difference between the Extreme and Sport models comes down to their chassis.

The Extreme chassis is McLaren’s take on a hardcore full-suspension mountain bike designed for optimal off-road performance. It’s outfitted with a SRAM XX Eagle AXS 12-speed electric transmission along with a RockShox RS Deluxe Select+ rear shocks with 145mm of travel and a RockShox Pike Rush RC fork with 160mm of front travel.

The Sport chassis, meanwhile, is a classic hardtail design lacking full suspension and going with mechanical gear shifting instead of electronic. It’s packing a SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed shifting system and RockShox Lyric Rush RC fork with 140m of travel.

Availability and Pricing

Regardless of which option you choose, it’s going to cost you.

The cheapest McLaren e-bike is the Sport 250, which is listed at $7,950. Another $1,000 gets you a Sport 600. The Extreme 250 has an SRP of $10,950 and the Extreme 600 tops out the line at $11,950.

All four models are available now in limited numbers and can be ordered directly from the McLaren Bikes website.
