Jeep revealed its first two EV concepts during a a 4xe Day celebration in 2022. One has been unveiled in production form — the Jeep Wagoneer S, which should hit dealers sometime in Q3 2024. The other, which has not been fully unveiled yet, is the Recon.
We’ve seen Jeep toying around with electric Wrangler concepts over the last few years. The brand is not ready to take its iconic nameplate electric yet; the real Wrangler EV reportedly is coming for 2027. But the Recon EV should be the next best thing while we’re waiting.
Like the Wrangler, the Recon is boxy, and it should be trail-rated. Depending on which angle you look at, the Recon looks sort of like the electric love child of a Wrangler and a Grand Cherokee. We’d also accept the point of view that the Recon’s design represents “what Jeep should have done with the Cherokee.”
Here’s what we know so far about the new Jeep Recon EV.
The Recon is not an electric Wrangler

Jeep said the Recon is “inspired by the Wrangler.” But despite the similar boxy shape, it’s not a Wrangler, and it’s not intended to replace the Wrangler. Why didn’t Jeep just make this the electric Wrangler? It should feature some key differences.
The Recon is likely to ride on the STLA Large EV platform rather than the Wrangler’s traditional body-on-frame setup. And we would bet not being the Wrangler frees Jeep to explore options like using an independent front and rear suspension for better on-road handling.
