Land Rover Is Now Selling ‘Remastered’ Defenders. Here’s What That Means

Land Rover Classic’s Works Bespoke program offers meticulously restored versions of the iconic SUV equipped with a modern V8 engines.

Prep thy retirement fund. Instead of haggling with a slew of third-party companies selling restored and modernized classic Land Rover Defenders, you now have the option to buy one directly from Land Rover’s own Works Bespoke division

Better yet, the in-house restomod includes a crucial upgrade in the form of a naturally aspirated Land Rover V8 offering 405 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, making these remastered versions much more potent than their naturally aging counterparts.

Technically speaking, you’ll be buying old “donor” Defenders, both two-door Defender 90 and four-door Defender 110 models, produced between 2012 and 2016, meaning they’re modernized enough not to require a total rebuild.

Land Rover’s in-house Works Bespoke division then strips, upgrades and rebuilds the SUV by hand to your specifications. In addition to the V8 engine, all models feature Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs and anti-roll bars, as well as four‑piston Alcon brakes with 335-millimeter front and 300-millimeter rear discs.

Inside, all models feature a few light updates, including a revamped shifter and a digital radio with a modern navigation system paired with a 3.5-inch touchscreen in the dash. Five monotone or eight duo-tone types of leather are also available for interior upholstery options. You can upgrade to premium seating as well. And that’s just the tip of the customization iceberg.

Paint colors can be matched to anything a buyer wants if any of Land Rover Heritage’s current robust paint lines aren’t appealing.

Exterior detail selections start with silver or black trim packages. Three grille options are available, too, including Heritage, Standard, and Adventure styles. 16-inch black or limestone Wolfs Wheels are standard, but bigger 18-inch Sawtooth alloys are available for a premium. Finishing touches like side steps, a roof rack, ladder, winch, and additional roof-mounted lighting round out the typical off-roading focused bells and whistle list.

But there are also two overlanding-specific options, including the Adventure Pack package that includes a roof tent and a Ply Guys Camper Conversion for further comfort while living off the grid.

Pricing starts at ~$250,000 for two door models and can reach as high as $270,000 for four door models before customizations and options.

As the saying goes, though, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. The base Defender 90 model from the program starts at £190,000 or ~$250,000. The base price of the bigger 110 starts at approximately $263,000 to $270,000, depending on seating configurations.

The again, some feel classic Land Rover Defenders are overrated, and you could always pick up a copycat similarly styled Ineos Grenadier for well less than half that spend. Or roll with the most hardcore modern Land Rover Defender ever created, a.k.a. The Defender Octa, and still save tons of cash.
