The 2025 Toyota GR86: Everything You Need to Know

Toyota’s new sports car may arrive sooner than you would expect and pack some wild changes.

The GR86 is Toyota’s most affordable sports car and one of the best cheap sports cars on the market. The model just debuted last year, along with its Subaru BRZ twin. But reports from Japan suggest a new edition may only be a couple of years away when the current model GR86 is due for a mid-cycle refresh.

Here’s what we know about the upcoming 2025 Toyota GR86.

Wait, didn’t the new GR86 just come out?

Yes, the current model debuted for the 2022 model year in America. However, it was a continuation of the previous model, and Autocar notes two reasons why the new GR86 may come sooner than expected. As constituted, the existing one is unlikely to meet both Japanese emissions standards and European safety regulations.

The new GR86 may move to a Toyota platform

The current GR86 rides on a Subaru platform. But the next generation may run on a Toyota one. A BestCarWeb rumor from October 2022 suggested the GR86 could use a shortened version of the Lexus IS platform, as the car may be too small for a move to the TNGA platform.

The new GR86 may be a hybrid

BestCarWeb in Japan reports that the likely engine for the new GR86 may be a hybrid, based on the turbocharged 1.3-liter engine used in the GR Yaris and the GR Corolla. The report expects the total system output to be 315 to 325 horsepower. The hybrid setup would presumably make the GR86 heavier. But BestCarWeb predicts the new model will still weigh less than 3,000 pounds.

But it may still keep a manual transmission

The BestCarWeb report lists a 6-speed manual transmission still being offered on the GR86. And going hybrid may not preclude that possibility. Toyota has confirmed it is working on a manual transmission for EVs. The Drive also found a patent earlier this year from Toyota for a manual transmission that worked with a hybrid.

If Toyota brings a manual transmission for hybrids to market, a sports car like the GR86 would be the most likely vehicle to get it.

When will the new GR86 arrive?

BestCarWeb says Toyota is planning to debut the new GR86 in 2025. Though an eventual American launch could certainly extend into 2026.
