The Best New Cars You Can Buy for Less than $50,000

New car prices have jumped the shark. But there are still some strong value plays out there.

New cars have become considerably more expensive in recent years. It wasn’t that long ago that the average price crossing $40,000 seemed bonkers, and spending $50,000 on a ride made you fancy; now, the average purchase price for a new car in America has been hovering above $48,000. Toyota’s head of North American sales Jack Hollis believes that price may top $50,000 soon.

The most egregious example may be full-size pickup trucks. An outlay in the mid-$50,000 range once got you a Ford F-150 Raptor. Now, you need to spend that much to get anything beyond a very basic work truck.

Despite the price increases, however, there are still some cool cars out there offering great value. Here are the best cars you can buy for less than $50,000.

Best Small Car: Honda Civic

honda civic honda
  • Powertrain: Turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four
  • Horsepower: 180
  • Torque: 177 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $23,950

Budget sedans are anything but sexy, and rolling with less than 200 horsepower, a CVT and cloth seats seems about as far from an enthusiast car as one can get. But in a car market gone bonkers, the Honda Civic still offers exceptional value. If you wan’t something sportier, there’s a Civic for that. If you want a really dialed-in sports car, there’s also a Civic for that.

Best Midsize Car: Honda Accord

honda accord hybrid Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: 2.0-liter inline-four hybrid
  • Horsepower: 204
  • Torque: 247 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $27,295

Sedan or not — the Honda Accord is about the surest bet in the automotive world. It has taken up residence on Car and Driver’s 10 Best list since debuting nearly 50 years ago. And it required the least debate of any pick on our best cars you can buy list. Several manufacturers have moved away from building family sedans; a major reason is that they can’t compete with the Accord.

Best Station Wagon: Subaru Outback

  • Powertrain: Turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer four
  • Horsepower: 260
  • Torque: 277 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $28,895

The Subaru Outback has been a reliable, durable and capable option for those who want something more capable than a car but smaller and nimbler than an SUV. The current model beats its predecessor in every way without losing any of its previous charm. And there’s now a super-powered Wilderness model.

Best Hatchback: Volkswagen Golf GTI

vw gti Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: Turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four
  • Horsepower: 241
  • Torque: 273 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $28,050

The revamped Volkswagen Golf GTI remains a phenomenal and gratifying car to drive. At the margins, the Mk8 exceeds its Mk 7.5 predecessor’s driving dynamics, which were damn near perfect. And you have to respect that, even though the new interior can be mind-bogglingly annoying.

Best Sports Car: Mazda MX-5 Miata

mazda mx 5 miata Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: 2.0-liter four-cylinder
  • Horsepower: 181
  • Torque: 151 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $28,050

The Mazda MX-5 Miata isn’t the most expensive sports car out there. And it’s far from the most powerful. But it’s one of the best pure driver’s cars you can buy with the classic combination of rear-wheel-drive, a manual transmission and a naturally-aspirated engine and a curb weight under 2,500 pounds.

Best Subcompact SUV: Subaru Crosstrek

subaru crosstrek Will Sabel Courtney
  • Powertrain: 2.5-liter boxer four
  • Horsepower: 180
  • Torque: 177 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $26,390

The Crosstrek has long excelled at offering what buyers want in an affordable package. The third-generation model of this Subaru builds on that success with well-thought-out evolutionary changes like smoothing out the design, improving the steering and subtle additions like fold-flat seats and wide opening doors with fatter sills for standing on.

Best Compact SUV: Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

hyundai tucson Hyundai
  • Powertrain: 1.6-liter inline-four hybrid
  • Horsepower: 226
  • Torque: 258 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $31,350

In a segment that’s all about compromises, the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid makes none of them. It looks distinctive. It feels like a premium product. It’s genuinely fun to drive. And it does it all while averaging a stingy 38 mpg combined.

Best 2-Row Midsize SUV: Hyundai Santa Fe

hyundai santa fe Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: Turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four
  • Horsepower: 277
  • Torque: 311 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $28,750

The Hyundai Santa Fe isn’t quite as zesty in the corners as the Tucson. But it may be the ultimate two-row family car. The Santa Fe has spacious seating areas and a massive trunk. It’s comfortable and pleasant to drive. The gas version is excellent. And if you want efficient options, there are both hybrid and plug-in hybrid options that are also stellar.

We can’t wait to see what Hyundai does with the all-new 2024 model.

Best 3-Row Midsize SUV: Kia Telluride

kia telluride side profile Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: 3.8-liter V6
  • Horsepower: 291
  • Torque: 262 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $35,890

The Kia Telluride has never come off quite as adventurous as Kia thought it needed to. But it remains a cut above the crowded field of affordable three-row family SUVs. It drives very well. It feels luxurious and spacious inside. It does all the things you need a family car to do without fuss and without making it feel like you sacrificed or settled.

Best Off-Road SUV: Jeep Wrangler

jeep wrangler Stellantis
  • Powertrain: 3.6-liter V6
  • Horsepower: 285
  • Torque: 260 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $31,895

Don’t mess with success has been a mantra for the Jeep Wrangler line throughout its history. But Jeep made some smart tweaks with the refreshed 2024 model, including enhanced off-road capability, larger screens and submersible powered front seats.

Best Compact Truck: Ford Maverick

ford maverick tremor Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: Turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four
  • Horsepower: 250
  • Torque: 277 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $23,400

Price increases and production not meeting demand have taken a bit of the shine off the Ford Maverick since launch. But it’s still a new segment-defining small pickup for the people that is fun, practical, affordable and — in hybrid guise — remarkably efficient. And Ford just added a beefier Tremor model.

Best Mid-Size Truck: Toyota Tacoma

toyota tacoma Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: 3.5-liter V6
  • Horsepower: 278
  • Torque: 265 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $28,600

You can make the case for a lot of midsize trucks. But none are as cool as the Toyota Tacoma, in a segment where coolness and fun reign supreme. We can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the long-awaited and all-new 2024 model.

Best Full-Size Truck: Toyota Tundra

toyota tundra limited in a school parking lot Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: Turbocharged 3.4-liter V6
  • Horsepower: 389
  • Torque: 479 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $39,965

Last year, the Toyota Tundra received a massive overhaul. It’s hard to knock off the Ford F-150 for best overall pickup (though Toyota is much closer than it was a couple of years ago). But we give the Tundra the nod here for pricing. You can get a second-tier SR5 trim with the robust 3.4-liter V6, tack on some options and still come in under $50,000.

Best Luxury Car: Genesis G70

genesis g70 sedan Genesis
  • Powertrain: Turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four
  • Horsepower: 252
  • Torque: 260 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $39,400

The Genesis G70 is a tremendous value play. And the sport sedan is not just a value play. With great looks, a luxurious cabin, sporty driving dynamics and some serious engine pop, it’s just as good as its big-name rivals — maybe better. Snag one while you still can.

Best Luxury SUV: Genesis GV70 2.5T

genesis gv70 suv Genesis
  • Powertrain: Turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four
  • Horsepower: 300
  • Torque: 311 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $43,150

Crossovers try to satisfy everyone. As a consequence, they can turn out sort of bland and featureless — competent at everything, but great at nothing particular. The Genesis GV70, however, is different: it performs every task well, without cutting any corners. The GV70 looks spectacular, drives superbly, feels fancy — and does it all at a relatively affordable price point.

Best Electric Car: Hyundai Ioniq 5

hyundai ioniq 5 Tyler Duffy
  • Powertrain: Single-motor electric
  • Horsepower: 225
  • Torque: 258 lb-ft
  • Starting MSRP: $41,450

There’s a reason the Hyundai Ioniq 5 took home three World Car of the Year awards. It looks rad as hell, without being over the top in person. It drives exceptionally smoothly and comfortably. And you can score a RWD SEL version with more than 300 miles of range for less than $50,000.
